Imaging an accreting black hole with event-horizon resolution
Ross Church
Accretion of gas onto black holes powers many of the most luminous and energetic phenomena in the Universe. Recently the Event Horizon Telescope released the first resolved images of the accretion flow on to a black hole at the innermost edge of the accretion disc - the closest we can come to seeing a black hole. I will talk about the astrophysics of accreting black holes and how this remarkable image was made.
