Today astronomers know of more than 4,000 planets orbiting around the Sun and other stars. This sample is large enough that meaningful comparisons can be made between theoretical models of planet formation and the observed planetary systems. I will explain what are believed to be the most important physical processes that allow dust and ice grains around young stars to combine to form planets of a wide range of masses and orbits.
