Description
The Standard Model of particle physics describes the fundamental building blocks of matter and their interactions. Axions are hypothetical particles that were originally suggested as a solution to what is called the "strong CP problem" – the empirical fact that one parameter of the strong interaction of the Standard Model appears to be (very close to) 0 while there is no reason for it to be. In addition, axions are of interest as possible candidates for the dark matter in the Universe. This non-luminous form of matter amounts to more than 80 % of the matter in the Universe, but its particle nature is yet unknown. This presentation will review the motivation for introducing axions and discuss a variety of ways to search for these elusive particles, including laboratory experiments but also ways to extract information about axions from their astrophysical or cosmological impact.
