Description
Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide a safe, clean, and inexhaustible energy source for the future. In next-step fusion devices and in future fusion power plants, energetic alpha-particles born of the fusion reactions themselves will play a key role in maintaining the fusion plasma at the relevant temperatures. In order to assess the fusion performance and safe operating regimes of such devices, knowledge of the dynamics of these alpha-particles is crucial. I will describe our efforts to diagnose the dynamics of energetic ions in existing fusion devices, along with our work on designing equipment for this purpose for ITER, the next-step fusion energy experiment currently being built in France. Finally, I will briefly discuss our own small electrostatic fusion experiment at DTU.
