Description
Mats Lindroos, Head of Accelerator at ESS and Adjunct Professor in the LU Particle physics division European Spallation Source ESS AB and The European Spallation source is being built just outside Lund. The construction of the facility is a huge technical and project management challenge. The accelerator will be world unique in its design and will be pushing the high intensity proton beam frontier forward. Accelerator design has since the beginning in the 1920s mainly been driven by the needs of and nuclear physics and particle physics. It is interesting to note that the ESS facility also can address issues in these two subjects while primarily being built for the needs of neutron scattering physics. I will in this talk give an overview of the ESS project, give specific examples from the accelerator project and finish with an overview of possible use of ESS for fundamental physics.
