Description

Numerous exoplanet surveys have yielded discoveries of over 4,000 exoplanets. Many of these planets are hot transiting gas giants in close orbits, that are amenable for characterisation of their atmospheres, due to a combination of their size, high temperatures and short orbital periods. High-resolution ground based spectrographs enable the measurement of absorption lines of atoms and molecules in the atmospheres of these planets, allowing the atmospheric composition to be probed. In this talk, I will discuss the history and methodology used to characterise these atmospheres, and focus on observations of the hottest gas giants that were recently discovered to possess rich absorption spectra. I will give examples of cutting edge present-day characterisation studies and contextualise the focus of the field in the near-future, which will be driven by the deployment of new ground-based and space-based facilities.
