Description

Professor Silke Biermann, Head of the Department of Physics at Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France. Currently Hedda Andersson guest professor at Matematisk Fysik.

Dynamical mean field techniques (DMFT), in conjunction with electronic structure methods, have led to tremendous progress in the description of spectral properties of materials with strong electronic Coulomb correlations. We will provide an overview and review some highlights.

The basic assumption of DMFT is that electronic correlations can be captured by a local (i.e. momentum-independent) many-body self-energy. In the second part of this talk, we present examples of materials where one needs to go beyond this paradigm, and show dramatic improvements in the theoretical description as compared to angle-resolved photoemission measurements, if such effects are included.
