Description

Information plays an important role in thermodynamics. This was realized early on, when Maxwell and Szilard considered thought experiments that include tiny beings which can observe and influence the course of single molecules. By exploiting fluctuations, these tiny beings (often referred to as Maxwell's demon) enable processes that are otherwise forbidden by the laws of thermodynamics. These old thought experiments have been brought back to the forefront of current research by two recent developments: First, the theory of thermodynamics has been extended to describe fluctuating systems, including micro- and nanoscale objects. Second, tremendous advancements in experimental control enabled implementations of the thought experiments, even pushing them to the quantum regime. In this talk, I will give an introduction to the role of information in thermodynamics and I will present recent progress in including information in the laws that describe the thermodynamics of nano-scale systems.
