Mötesplats Rydberg - Anders Sjöland - "Management and final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Sweden"

Europe/Stockholm
Description

Anders Sjöland is freshly appointed adjunct prof. at Nuclear Physics.

Sweden has been a leader in management of nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel since the 1970s. SKB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co.) has been tasked to handle research, development of demonstration, as well as construction and operation of a number of facilities. The largest project is the development of the final repository, planned to be built in Forsmark. It is based on the Swedish KBS-3 concept, where the spent nuclear fuel is placed in copper canisters surrounded by bentonite clay in the Swedish granitic bedrock at a depth of 4-500 m.

SKB submitted a licence application for a permit to construct the final repository for spent nuclear fuel in 2011, and it has since been reviewed by various authorities and bodies, and now rests with the Swedish government.

In the talk the Swedish KBS-3 disposal concept will be describes and discussed. The license application process will be explained and commented on basis of the present complicated situation.

Finally, the some work done at the Nuclear Physics Division at the department will be presented.

The meeting will be hybrid. We start 15 o'clock at the Rydberg Hall with coffee and cake. The talk starts 15:15. You can also join digitally in Zoom: https://lu-se.zoom.us/j/910953381
