Description
It is not more than 100 years ago the electric light was invented. One of the major advantages was the fact that hen could lay eggs all year around. For man it has resulted in the 24/7 society. This revolving active intensive life has not been associated with any healt advantages. However, during the recent years a new revolution is taking place. The LED (light ewmitting diode) light has made it possible to produce eneregy efficient light with varying intensity and frequency but also with variations over the day. As a consequence research on different light conditions has started. Some examples can be given: An appropriate light intensity will improve the achievements in school, increase alertness in offices and improve the wellbeing for elderly in senior home facilities. The frequency has a vaste effect on human performance as well. Yellow light at night may have the same effect as coffee. Red light can reduce depression. Green light may improve the walking ability in Parkinson. Blue light can adjust jet lag. A decade ago the third receptor in the eye was discovered. It is sensitive for blue light and synchronises our circadian rhythm. As can be seen the possibilities goes far beyond our imagination. The impact of "sensory medicine" should not be underestimated.
