Future fuels - combustion research for sustainable transportation

Abstract: Even though society is to a large extent moving towards electrification, the use of combustion engines in parts of the transportation sector is still necessary. In particular, aviation and long distance shipping are means of transportation that require combustion engines. To achieve sustainable transportation it is necessary to develop and study fuels that can replace fossil fuels, and the solutions must be sustainable through the full value chain from harvest to production and use of the fuels. In this talk the challenges related to sustainable transportation using combustion are outlined, and the need for further research are identified. The EU project ENGIMMONIA is mentioned as an example of research and development related to sustainable shipping with ammonia as the fuel. Examples of research and development needed to achieve production and  use of aviation fuels are taken from the recently funded centre of competence CESTAP, hosted by LTH."
