This talk will address how the growth of importance of X-ray diffraction from the discovery of X-rays by Röntgen and the pivotal experiment by von Laue, Knipping and Friedrich has transformed science. This technique has come full circle from opening new vistas to becoming a new dogm that has been successfully challenged repeatedly over the past few years but where old half-truths are slow to be refuted.
