The commissioning of the MAX IV synchrotron radiation facility in Lund marks the beginning of a new generation of storage-ring-based light sources. This new generation delivers one to two orders of magnitude higher performance than the previous generation and allows realization of groundbreaking experiments on a variety of systems and materials at the atomic and molecular levels. In this seminar, I will describe the conceptual basis of the MAX IV design development and consider how such developments could be taken further in order to realize even higher performance in the future.
