Description

With High Performance- and High Throughput Computing (HPC/HTC) relying more and more on non-traditional computing hardware, any software used in High Energy Physics that is in any way computing limited, needs to look into using these new types of hardware. NVidia, AMD and Intel are all competing to provide the most convenient software development environment for their own hardware, providing us with a relatively complicated hardware and software landscape to develop software in.
In this talk I will give a rough overview of recent trends in HPC/HTC computing, describe what sort of computer languages can be used to make use of these new "heterogeneous" computing resources, go through the software development plans of the ATLAS Experiment, and then give practical guidelines on how one should write HEP software for GPUs.
