Description

The nature of Dark Matter phenomenon remains one of the biggest unsolved problem of contemporary fundamental physics. Since early astrophysical observations of gravitational effects of Dark Matter, many theoretical approaches that would elaborate on its possible origins, properties, cosmological evolution and astrophysical implications have been developed. Many experimental searches for particle physics candidates of Dark Matter in collider measurements and in astrophysics have been deployed greatly cratering into the parameter space of the most popular models. Several news ways of probing the yet hidden physics of Dark Sectors and Dark Matter are being established.

The School will start with a basic overview of experimental situation with searches for hints of Dark Matter and theoretical foundations of Hidden Sectors and what role they play in fundamental physics. The planned lectures and discussion sessions would be primarily targeted at Ph.D. students and young postdocs, but may also be of interest for more senior researchers. The lectures will elaborate on some of the basic theoretical concepts and the status of phenomenological explorations of Dark Matter and Dark Sectors. The School will include extended discussion sessions, with active participation of students, researchers and lecturers, where selected topics and questions would be covered in detail. Finally, a specialised session devoted to students' and young researcher's short presentations about their research projects will be arranged.

Format of the School:

We plan for a hybrid (in-person & online) event, with a limited on-site participation. All the lectures and presentations will be broadcasted via Zoom, recorded and posted online.

The hybrid format will also be applied for coffee breaks, welcome drink and school dinner so that on-site and remote participants would stay connected and have an opportunity for informal discussions.

Due to active Covid-19 regulations at Lund university, only a limited number of on-site participants are allowed to be present in auditorium, with the majority of trainees and lecturers participating online/remotely.

There is no registration fee. The registration deadline has been extended to

The Standard Model of particle interactions is an extremely successful theory of nature. It describes the electric, magnetic, weak and strong forces of nature. It fails however to take into account dark matter and can’t even explain why matter wins over antimatter. Last but not least the Standard Model does not take into account quantum gravity. It must therefore be extended. But what are the possible constraints coming from embedding the extension of the Standard Model in a consistent theory of quantum gravity? We will use string theory, as quantum gravity template, to deduce a number of conjectures and conditions on the type of extensions allowed for the Standard Model. This is the Swampland program. What is even more exciting is that the same physics underlying the fundamental forces of nature can be used to rationalize our understanding of infectious disease spreading and even help rationalizing virus mutations with impact on several realms of scientific enquiry.

      • Dark matter within the Standard Model? 20m

It was recently suggested that a stable bound state of 6 quarks could exist and that it could solve the dark matter puzzle without any need for extension of the Standard Model of particle physics. In the presentation I will critically examine this suggestion: I will comment on the criticism about the ability of the "sexaquark" dark matter to give the correct relic abundance and I will summarize the direct detection bounds for this dark matter candidate. I will suggest further ways how to probe hadronically interacting dark matter that were not considered in the original publication.
